If you desire to restore the firmness and shape of your breasts, then a breast lift (also called a mastopexy) may be right for you.  The breast lift procedure raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surronding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.  A breast lift rejuvenates the female figure to be more youthful, uplifted, and firm.

Selecting a Qualified Plastic Surgeon

It is extremely important to be sure your surgeon is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.   Just because a physician is board certified, it does not mean they are properly trained to perform breast augmentation.  Always clarify that your plastic surgeon is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  You can also verify this by going to their website at www.abplsurg.org.  It is also very important that the surgeon performs the surgery in the main OR of a hospital or a fully accredited surgery center.

Breast lifts should only be performed in a certified surgical center.  Surgical Centers may be certified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc. (AAAASF), or Medicare/CMS.  Be sure to find out which organization has certified the surgical center before having surgery there.

Dr. Ehrmantraut only performs breast lifts in Maryland certified surgery centers, including the surgery center at Calvert Memorial Hospital and the Pembrooke Square Surgery Center in Waldorf.

Description of the Breast Lift Procedure

A breast lift, also called a mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to uplift and improve the shape of a female breast that sags down, usually past the breast crease, may have a nipple and areola that point downward, and may have stretched skin or an enloarged areola.  When an increase in breast volume is also desired, breast implants may be inserted at the time of the breast lift.  There are many variations of the procedure; but the most common is where the surgeon makes an incision around the areola, vertically down from the areola to the breast crease and horizontall along the breast crease.  Through these incisions the underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped.  The nipple and areola are repositioned to a natural, more youthful height.  If necessary, enlarged areolas are reduced by excising the skin at the perimeter.  Excess breast skin is removed to compensate for a loss of elasticity.

Risks and Beneftis of the Breast Lift Procedure

Possible risks of a breast lift include blood pooling beneath the skin (hematoma), infection or poor healing a the incision site, and changes in nipple or breast sensations that are usually temporary.  All surgery carries risks associated with anesthesia.  These and other risks should be fully discussed prior to your consent and undergoing the surgery.

The final results of a breast lift will appear over a few months as swelling decreases and breast shape and position settle.  The breasts now appear more youthful and perky.  Women who undergo the breast lift procedure are usually happier and more satified with their new shape.
